Auslan (Australian Sign Language) is the primary language of the Australian Deaf community, used by an estimated 10,000–20,000 Deaf Australians. For NDIS participants who use Auslan as their primary language, choosing a plan manager who can communicate directly in Auslan — or who has robust Deaf-friendly written and interpreter support — is an important practical decision.

Many Deaf and hard of hearing NDIS participants navigate plan management primarily through written communication (email, online portals) or through an interpreter. Even if your plan manager doesn't have an Auslan-fluent staff member, ask about their communication options: Can they use video relay services? Do they work with NAATI-accredited Auslan interpreters? Are they comfortable with written-only communication for all meetings and budget queries?

The TIS National interpreter service is available free to NDIS participants for phone-based interpretation, but Auslan is not a TIS language. For Auslan, NDIS participants can request a NAATI-accredited Auslan interpreter funded through their plan under Capacity Building — Improved Daily Living, or through the NDIS's own access processes.
